The journey begins - LWB TGE to two berth camper.

Is the fly screen midge proof? Most are not as mentioned above. ? Wirey little buggers, they get in everywhere. Love scotland. Make sure your not O+ or the population of midge will be drawn to you like .... well you can finish that saying......
At least everyone I know that seem to be bothered badly are O blood group, I just sit and laugh with my rare blood group that means I will die by some horrible ascendant while the midge population sit back and laugh!

Time will tell if it's Midge proof as we like to visit your part of the British Isles as well as France etc.

Is there any finished pictures, be interested to see end product. Hows it all standing up 18 months into use ?.
When it was working it worked well but the simple answer is, it hasn't stood the test of time!

But most of the failure is our own fault due to sharp grit being deposited in the bottom runner and not being brushed out immediately before the screen was used.

The tensioning threads (and they are very thin) that run in the bottom runner have broken and will need renewal. I've looked at numerous threads on the Motorhome Fun Forum about this and know it's a common problem. Many folks are replacing the original threads with Kevlar kite string. It looks like a very tedious job but I'm going to have a go. I know it's a job that involves the complete removal of the screen to effect the repair.

I'll try to document the job but I guess it could be well peppered with expletives!

Cheers, was more about general build, conversion as thinking of doing our own.

The conversion in general is good. I can't remember how much of the story I told before so here it is in a nutshell...

I've converted five VWs, 1xT4, 3xT5s & 1xT6 in the last twenty years but age (now nearly 77) etc. persuaded me that this one should be done to our spec by someone else. I found a local very small business who was willing to take the job on despite being told that having done them myself I would be "A pain in the ass".
Andy (converter) was given a long list of what we 'thought' we wanted bearing in mind that we've never owned a camper of this size. He translated that list into his understanding of our requirements along with making it fit into the vehicle. I then threw the curved balls of the Lippert bed and the Horrex flyscreen into the mix, remember that the flyscreen was not available in the UK at the time.
Andy was only about four miles from my house so working together was not a problem however only a couple of months into the job I was diagnosed with prostate cancer which threw lots of things up in the air somewhat!! Work continued with some ups and downs to a handover time of late November 2023.
Since November 2023 we've used the van for over 180 nights, I've fitted the 4kW Eberspacher (details elsewhere on this forum), changed the 30Amp B2B for the newer 50Amp Orion XS and altered the electrics to my satisfaction, no reflection on the converter. The overhead lockers in the rear were not large enough for our liking and these are being changed when time allows. The lower right side lockers were built to satisfy my original requirement to provide as large a floor width as possible but we now realise that the lockers should be wider to accommodate levelling ramps, EHU cables, water fill hose and the tools, bits & bobs etc. that one carries on long trips so these will be rebuilt asap.

I'll try to add photos of any significant changes that occur when they have happened. The five that I built for our own use proved that regardless of the thought that goes into design it's almost impossible to get it right without a few practice runs but mine couldn't have been too bad as two have gone to the same second owner.

To fill in the health situation, I had no symptoms, went for a test just on case so I now press all male acquaintances of 55 years plus to get a PSA test. I've now had radiotherapy to treat the cancer and live in the hope that it's cured.

Shit man hope you get the all clear, certainly agree with tests but there's loads of other things out there to throw a large spanner in the work !!.
Yeah had some T5, T6s and still have my bay (on other forum).
Thinking seriously of conversion and trying to get some pointers. Spoke to Andy recently and concerned with the 3 hour distance, saw local converter but didn't instil me joy. Any pics of yours bud. Reference to age there isn't any lots of oldies drive the 4 tonne a class so enjoy 😉

Here are the pictures that Andy posted on his FB page about the time that we collected it.

The van size is no problem to either of us, we've covered thousands of miles in Transporters, all LWBs and this is just a bit bigger!

My other challenge is a 1946 Beetle with a non-synchro gearbox & cable brakes, that can be quite interesting at times. I've driven it to two vintage VW meetings in Germany with Mrs R following in a T6, that's a 1200 mile round trip! Not all in one weekend I may add. The picture was taken at Stanford Hall this last May (2025) where I organise the Historic Beetle display.

Son has a Type 25, 1990 Westfalia diesel, this is his second, he had an air-cooled 2litre some years ago.
