Victron battery to battery charger and D+ signal

Hi all I have a 2023 man tge 180 4x4 I’ve just purchased the new victron 12-12v 50amp battery to battery charger to top up my X2 190AH secondary batteries.

I have tried to run the charger with the ‘vehicle running detection mode’ and ‘smart alternator fitted ’ selected on the app but because of the smart alternator often or not the starter battery voltage drops below the 12.4 volt cut of threshold whilst driving about therefor doesn’t activate the victron charger.

I have heard of people using a D+ signal on other manufactures to bypass this flaw which from what I gather the D+ is a true signal of the engine running or not. Does this exist on the man tge? If so where can I find it? I have seen a picture on here of a fuse under passenger seat highlighted in yellow indicating it’s a d+ but a quick meter shows this is just an ignition live. Cheers Chris

It does exist, needs to be wired to the BCM and coded, the VW term is Battery Isolation in the BCM coding, that's how VW operate the simple split charge for the factory fitted second battery. I've got the factory wiring diagrams if you need them.

However most folks simply connect to an ignition controlled live in the fuse box under the left front seat via a suitable fuse. That is how I intend to do mine when I up-grade to the latest Victron 50A B2B.

Thankyou for your response, do you run a victron battery charger currently!? I have a whole bunch of questions that I need to ask as I am experience massive flaws in the system unless of course it’s something I have done / not set up correctly on the app!?

Cheers

Yes I do but the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12 30 one which does work well without the direct wire to the ignition +12v or D+.
It's my plan to change that for the Victron Orion XS 50A soon and I expect to have to run a wire to the ignition +12v, I hope I don't have to get to the BCM to add the wire into that as it's located in a difficult place.

You may find some more help on this FB page although typically of FB you will have to sort the wheat from the chaff.

I have a 2020 Crafter without a second battery. I connected a wire to PIN 72 in the lower connector of the BCM and adapted the VCDS setting "MAS01490-ENG142037-Energy management-Zweitbatterie", but there is only about 0.6V on the pin, regardless of whether the engine is running or not.

I thought the BCM might not detect any load and therefore does not output a signal, so I connected a 5W bulb, but that did not help—in fact, it dropped to 0V.

Is there anything else I should configure in VCDS? What could I have done wrong?

I have a victron orion XS running on a crafter 2018. The signal to turn on, I found a ignition switched live wire near the fuses under passenger seat. I took that feed into a switch near driver seat, so I can switch off when not needed, from there to the H terminal of the orion. By default, I have this switched off, as solar is enough 8 months of the year. I turn it on, after I started the engine, and also make use of it if I have a very long mountain pass descent, free power from engine breaking regeneration.
