Simple off grid electrics, how to?

As per the title can anyone point me in the direction of anything clear in regard to designing simple electrical systems.

As an overview I initially want to use the space in the engine bay for a leisure battery, I don’t know if this will be big enough to house a battery that I need? I don’t even know what battery I need and how to calculate the requirements.

We are looking for a battery big enough to power a diesel heater overnight, run some simple lights and a couple of USB ports. Ideally to be able to run a diesel heater for a total of 24hrs across a few days (im guessing 8-12 hrs in a UK winter?) My initial thoughts are a B2B charger, a basic fuse board and connecting up the outputs = diesel heater. How do I go about calculating load requirements, I’ve read an article of calculations a few times and it still seems to make little sense V=IR Volts = Amps x Ohms. P=IV. Watts = Amps x Volts. ???????

Can anyone suggest any articles/books to read please or give me basics on how to determine requirements. I am guessing if I know the watts per hour ‘draw’ on a diesel heater I multiple by this by the number of hours I anticipate using it an add on a percentage over, I then need determine how many hours driving to charge the leisure battery from X% to 100% etc…… lots to think about……

And finally can anyone suggest a supplier, I have historically used 12vPlanet who I found good but any recommendations and maybe a supplier who can also advise!!

Thanks in advance

Hi Guy, if there's one book you need to read it would be "Wiring Unlimited" by Victron, that provides all the information you'll need.
Besides that, this wire diameter calculator tool is extremely useful: Leitungquerschnittsrechner für Photovoltaikanlagen - Leitungsempfehlungs, Spannungsabfall und Ertragsverlust Berechnung

Why not place the battery inside the living area to keep it warm?

This is Dutch and when you translate with the browser you'll get lots of info.

A really good English site is Explorist on YouTube.
