Crafter campervan rear seat

Afternoon all.

I have pushed the button on a new crafter which we are converting into a camper.

Looking to add a 1+1+1 rear seat setup, ideally on rails and quick release. This will give flexibility to adapt based on our requirement.

Has anyone fitted either vw caravelle/kombi or transit custom type seats into their crafter. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

Stu

I looked into the caravelle triple on rails-depending on your requirements it could work but it’s too wide (150cm iirc) to be useable in “most” conversions ie if you want a kitchen unit next to sliding door opening-there is a couple of companies (AB race cruisers?) who use fixed triple seating below a fixed height bed-it’s a good setup but again very little kitchen area-if you fit any sort of kitchen in front of it it’s almost pointless having a sliding system

A lot of it depends how many you need to seat & sleep I guess? And if you require a kitchen area?

Thanks for the replies.

In terms of layout I am thinking of prioritise where we spend the most time in the van. For us that’s:

1) sleeping
2) travelling
3) cooking
4) showering

1) Sleep is the top so I was considering a fixed rear bed at circa 500mm high to give some garage space below. A second double bed motorised from the ceiling to form bunks.

2) travelling which was the idea of 5 comfortable seats in the van, two in the front and three in the back.

3) kitchen - look to have units behind rear seats up to the bed. Gives circa 1.2m each side of the van kitchen/storage space.

4) shower - looking to do an external rear shower

It’s similar to the attached photo. Hope that makes sense.

We want to comfortably seat 5 and sleep 4 in the van. Grandparent or brother in law will typically use a tent when we get to our destinations.

What would the sleeping setup be then if you had the 3 clip out seats?

The issue Ive found when planning ours ( family of 4) is that there really isn’t as much room as you imagine there is even in a lwb, having seating & sleeping seperate just wasn’t going to work for us so I went for a rock/roll style bed so it covers both, I was originally going to do a passenger seat in rear and make bunk beds but there just isn’t the room!

That van you pictured looks great but it could be a xlwb plus the camera angle is intentionally making it look huge (which is common) in reality it’d be as cramped as anything else

What I would say is that if you can sleep across the width of the van then you’ll be at an advantage- It was just too cramped for me, and I’m not particularly tall (5’11) without fitting side flares which were either not readily available or too much £££££ for the lwb version

Understood, yeah it’s surprising how fast space disappears.

In terms of bed setup I was looking at a fixed bed at circa 500mm from the ground to give a garage. Then use a lippert modular bed system which drops down from the ceiling. This would give the two double beds one on top of the other. Wife and I can use the lower and the kids can use the upper. Everyone has a large bed then.

I have considered the rock and roll setup my only thing with a lot of them is using a 860mm seat/ bed, it just doesn’t give a comfortable sleeping area for two.

Nice setup, I’ve seen one with similar and it’s a good solution guess it relies on having only a small amount of gear in the garage area though? Mine is rammed!

Yeh the width of the rock/roll is an issue, I’ve gone for a 915mm wide in mine, though it’ll then be tight ish for the kitchen! My kids are only young though so I’m hoping it’ll be big enough at least for now!

Yep, it does kind of limit the garage which has been on my mind, only advantage may be helping to stop me going overweight 😁

Your build sounds interesting, have you got a build thread going or any pictures.

Cheers.

Plans may have evolved slightly. Is it possible to fit seatbelts into the c pillar does anyone know, and if so is reinforcement plates required. Thanks.
