Destination - Northern Italy (ish)
Duration - about 5 weeks
Route…
Calais,
TL to Dunkirk.
TR to Lille and Luxembourg
Straight on to Lausanne, Switzerland, Geneva
A detour to Annecy (it’s beautiful, so a must do)
Back to Switzerland and we were hoping to use the Grand St Bernard pass, but it’s still too early and closed with snow, so €68 saw us through the Mount Blanc tunnel, into Italy. Hopefully we can do it on our return in a few weeks time.
Funny going from one side of the tunnel at 4 degrees to 20 degrees a few miles on the other!
Driving a LWB here isn’t too much of a problem, even with a double bike rack on the tow bar…..
HOWEVER
In this part of Italy, finding somewhere to turn around, let alone park is a serious challenge anywhere near the towns.
Plenty of ‘pully in places’ beside the S roads, where you can quietly overnight (no chairs etc)
Not found too many Sostas yet though, Germany was much much easier to both wild camp or find a cheap Stolplatz.
Just over a week in and we’ve just spent 1 days doing the Cinque Terre towns (A UNESCO World heritage site) and 1 day doing Portafino.
For the Cinque terra we overnighted in a sea front car park in Levanto, and bought a carte pass for the nearby train. It was a one day hop on hop off pass, €18.20 each but well worth it. We managed all 5 Towns in one day, but we were up at 6.
2 points- you would not believe the crowds - six deep in the platforms!
- the towns are almost inaccessible by road, and there is now where to park.
Portafino
Quite simply the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Put it on your bucket list.
We stopped at a Sosta in Santa Margharita, and took a return boat trip €16 each expensive but well worth it. Ageing very crowded, and it’s still not peak season.
